Miniature Highland Cow

Miniature cows are exactly what they sound like, they’re just normal cows, but smaller. While that may seem quite unproductive at first, there are plenty of reasons as to why farmers would opt for them as opposed to going for normal sized cows.

So, what exactly are miniature cows? Essentially, they are normal cows that have been bred into a more compact size. This also means that you’ll be getting a lot less milk from them but at the same time you’ll be wasting a lot less money caring for them since they take up a lot less space and they eat and drink a lot less than a regular sized cow too. Highlands are a great working breed for homesteaders and hobby farmers because they are a dual-purpose breed producing low cholesterol, tender, lean meat and rich, creamy milk. They aren’t picky eaters and can clean up a low-quality pasture or clear a wooded area that can then be converted into a shaded pasture for summer. They also make fantastic pets!

FAQS

Miniature cattle are great for small acreages. They can be anywhere to 1/2 or even 1/3 the size of standard cattle, so, therefore, require less feed and land.

The Scottish Highland breed of cattle is docile and does not get stressed easily. This makes them easy to breed, raise, and train without much trouble. The cattle are very smart animals and can actually be trained in many ways that other breeds do not have the capacity for.

A superior, intelligent animal

They are very docile, easy to handle and halter train, easy keepers and the meat is lower in cholesterol and fat, but higher in protein to all other breeds of cattle. The Highland breed of cattle has lived for centuries in the rugged remote Scottish Highlands.

While Highland cattle are primarily recognized as a beef breed, they nevertheless can potentially be put to use as a family milk cow. Naturally, milk production from a Highland cow won’t compete with that of a dedicated dairy breed, but Highland milk is rich and possesses a high butterfat content.

Just as miniature cows eat less than a full-size cow, you’ll need just ½ – 1 acre of pasture for each cow and you will have less manure to haul away.

Mature cows weigh from 450-850 pounds and Mature bulls range from 700-1100 pounds.
